Understanding Audio Visual Performances

About a year ago, I started carefully evaluating the different things that we needed to do in regards to our audio visual performances. I was in charge of creating presentations for the school, and it was a lot harder than I had initially anticipated. Fortunately, a friend of mine helped me to understand what I was doing wrong, and it made a big difference. Within a few short months I was making better progress, and I was really happy with the difference it made in my life. This blog is all about understanding audio visual performances and making things easier.

What To Know About Two Common Surround Sound Formats

Alyssa Gutierrez

Are you looking to create a home theater experience in your home with immersive sound? If so, you'll definitely want to know more about the different options for the sound formats that come out of the speakers. With there being multiple options to pick from, you'll want to know which format is best for you so that you can select the right speakers for your home theater.

Object-Based Sound

One of the latest sound formats that you can use is based on object-based sound. While it goes by several different branded names, the concept is the same with how the technology works. The speakers have the ability to project the sound to precise areas of the room to move the audio in three dimensions. It is an incredibly immersive experience, with the sound coming from various directions.

A unique aspect of object-based sound is that it uses overhead speakers to really create the 3D sound effect. It will feel like you are listening to a movie in a theater since you'll really be able to hear sounds traveling around you.

When looking at the different manufacturers that make object-based sound formats, pay attention to the speaker layout requirements. You'll find that some have a flexible speaker layout and can adapt to the number of speakers that you have in your home theater setup. This allows you to start small with only a few speakers, and then expand it over the years.

Meanwhile, other manufacturers make object-based sound systems that require a very specific speaker setup when it comes to quantity and speaker placement and lack the flexibility to upgrade later on.

5.1 Surround Sound

A more traditional surround sound experience involves a 5.1 speaker setup. There is a center speaker, two stereo speakers at the front of the room, two surround speakers behind you, and a subwoofer to deliver low-frequency sounds. Surround sound does not use overhead speakers, which makes the setup a bit easier. When you combine these speakers together it can simulate the effect of sound traveling around you.

A reason to select a 5.1 surround sound setup is because it is widely supported by many movies and TV shows. You can set up a 5.1 surround sound system at an affordable price, which is crucial if you are on a budget. You'll often see these advertised as a complete setup in a single box, which includes the speakers and compatible receiver to plug your devices into. You also have the option to add additional speakers later to create a 7.1 surround sound setup.
